Eucalyptus
A Tropical Herb with Medicinal Use for Coughs
Nutritional, Culinary & Medicinal Uses
Culinary: One can make eucalyptus tea, and even the raw leaf has been described as tasting like a cough drop.
Medicinal Uses: The leaves are high in antioxidants, can help to relieve cold symptoms, can help to reduce cavities and gum disease due to ethanol and macrocarpal C. They also can, due to cineole and limonene, reduce pain. It can also boost ceramide production in the skin, helping to moisturize [1]. We used it as a cough suppressant in tea when sick in January 2024, as it helped to alleviate congested air passages.
How to Cultivate and Harvest
Planting: Plant in well-drained, acidic or neutral soil in full sun. Water deeply, and after that it has relatively low water needs. Start inside; put the seeds on top and gently press them into the soil. Wait 14 to 21 days for the seeds to germinate. Harden off the seeds for a week before transplanting [2][3].
Harvesting: Harvest late in the growing season, especially if it has been moved out of a greenhouse. This is because we have found that it takes some months for new growth which looks healthy and desirable for harvesting to appear. One can observe in the adjoining picture that the leaves look healthy and strong; the picture was taken in mid-August. Simply snip the leaves off.
Preservation
Air dry the leaves on a paper towel out of sunlight until they are crispy [3]. We dried them in a dehydrator on 95 F. One can also hang them upside down for three to four weeks and store in a dry place.
History
Eucalyptus trees date back to at least 35 million years. They were first reported in Australia in 1642 and were used by some of the first British settlers for medicinal purposes. It was advocated to be used as an antiseptic. The plant arrived in the United States in the 1850s [4].
