Protecting Your Harvest from Critters

Maximize what you bring to the table

Critters

Know what your critters like and grow those in protected areas. (See enclosure we have created in our backyard in the photo below)

Our main critters are squirrels. They do not bother greens such as lettuce, kale, herbs, asparagus. Thus these can be grown outside the enclosure. Raised beds will protect crops from rabbits who would like lettuce. Encourage predators such as cats and rejoice when you see hawks.

Pest Control

Ladybugs: Ladybugs can eat mites, thrips, white flies, scales and mealybugs. In the lifetime of a ladybug each insect can eat up to 5,000 aphids. See picture below of a ladybug devouring white flies on a potato plant.

History of Pesticides

The practice of minimizing or eradicating the effect of pests on one's harvest is thousands of years old. This is evident with the ancient Sumerians, who about 4500 years ago used sulfur compounds to kill insects. Chinese farmers as much as 2300 years ago began timing their crop harvests to avoid periodic influxes of pests. In other areas, such as Europe, by the 1600s, substances such as nicotine and arsenic were used for elimination of crop predators. [1]
